Shopping for trouble…

Take a look at Mel’s blog post with the picture of someone food shopping at her local grocery store. That cart is full of shit food.

The Clothes Make the Girl: Grocery Cart of Poison.

I can’t tell you how many times I go to Wegman‘s and see carts just like this. I like to look in carts while I am shopping and while I am certainly not perfect in my eating and food shopping habits, I think I do pretty well – 80/20 rule right?

Seeing a cart like this makes me sad and angry. The parent is teaching their kid to eat this way and it’s a the kind of thing that keeps getting worse – I am not just talking about weight issues – long term health begins when you are young.

This is reprehensible in my opinion. Is this an issue of lack of nutritional eduction, ignorance,  lack of caring, giving up or don’t give a shit? Who knows – but anyone with common sense knows the basics  of what is  junk food vs healthy food even if some in both categories are questionable. There are some foods that there is no question and that shit is in that cart.

  1. Jason sent me this article once about this woman who feeds her family of four on $10 a month, or something crazy like that. As I wrote back to him, I could do that too if I maximized coupons and only fed us meals made of crap.

It’s sad, but there aren’t any coupons for produce and families on a budget can maximize their limited dollars and food stamps by buying empty-caloried filler foods. Some farmers markets have started accepting food stamps, but while the huge government subsidies for corn and soy continue, there will be an excess of cheap, unhealthy food.

And I’ll step off that soapbox now.

I have learned through working with some inner city youth that poor eating habits is exactly what these kids are learning. We had a discussion about health and nutrition once and the discussion leader mentioned how eating at McDonald’s isn’t the best choice. One girl responded, “Oh, that’s okay. I eat at Burger King.” And she was completely serious. We will be having additional nutrition discussions in the future…
