CrossFit Field Trip: Gymnastics

Have you taken the pledge yet? I’m not one of those bloggers that is going to try to sell you something — but this really is a good cause. Gatorade is going to donate money to to the Women’s Sports Foundation  — and you just need to sign the pledge.  And if you leave a comment on that post, you may win an autographed soccer ball. Can’t beat the odds there!  I think any time you can give money to a worthy cause by a click of your mouse — you should and helping young female athletes is a very worthy cause!

The mission of the Women’s Sports Foundation is ” To advance the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity.”    So don’t wait, take the pledge already.

So I’m very excited because tonite, CrossFit Impavidus is doing a field trip. We are headed to a real gymnastics gym for a bit of an adult open gym time. I am constantly challenging myself to try the wonders that are gymnastics. Having grown up with ZERO motivation to do any of it, and many missed opportunities to learn, I am finding a real joy in learning how to hang upside down!  It’s going to be super fun to really get to use the tools of a real gymnast tonite and see what I can do. I will definitely take some pics and keep you posted.

In preparation for tonite, Coach Jerry had us do some gymnastics today, as usual. I love how when he gets to the box in the AM, he likes to ask one of us what we would like to try today. Like any of us have a clue! We always laugh and say, Handstands?!! And he says — nope, we did that already and finds something else tricky for us. I  know you are thinking, our version of fun is a big off kilter –and yes this is at 6A!

Warmup
800m jog
10 OHS
10 Pass thrus
10 Whirly Birds
10 Good Mornings
10 Hamstring Stretches
10 Kick to Handstands

Re: my handstands I am getting really good at. I no longer need a kick start and have stayed away from the wall for more than 5s at a pop. Thinking back to Jan/Feb/Mar time frame, when I was too scared to even try it until Coach Marc got in my face and said –‘JUST COMMIT!’. It really has gotten me through a lot lately. You have to commit yourself to whatever you are doing — and sure enough, it comes through!

Skill
Back Bends
Skin the Cat

WOD
15m AMRAP
SDHP (53#)
Wall Balls (10#)
total: 13

So the issue today was that I went too light on the SDHP, so when I got tired, I lost form and bent my arms too early. Key thing is to let your hips do the work and pop ’em and let them push the weight up. When you bend your arms too early, you break the momentum and your arms do the work! So, I should have gone heavier so that I couldn’t bend them too early and force my hips to do their thing — lesson learned!
