Gymnastics means the end of your comfort zone!

Last night was a CrossFit Field trip to Apex Gymnastics for 2 hours of fun filled open gym time. What some people call fun, others call torture. Gymnastics is hard — and it combines coordination, balance and strength all together at the same time! I mean come on, Really? Does it have to? I have issues with at least 2 of those 3 and after last night, yeah I confirmed it.

One of my friends, Jon brought his friend Kim on the field trip. She was in the regional games — which makes her a CrossFit celeb to all of us CrossFit cronies — She is training for next year’s games, so is giving gymnastics a try to help give her an edge.

It was kind of expensive to do on a regular basis though — $20 bucks for 2 hours. We had a large group so I am going to reach out to them to see if we can get a better hourly deal. It may be better to do request a special class and have people pay a one time fee for a set amount of classes.

It was so fun –it’s a great feeling to step out of your comfort zone and try this stuff. The floor is all cushy, so you don’t have to worry about falling flat on your face. It was so far removed from anything I have done which made it challenging, frustrating and super fun at the same time. It was different than my normal routine too.   I saw this quote yesterday and it totally fits –

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

I will post a video of my famous cartwheel when I get a copy of it. Thanks to Jason it will be forever memorialized on the internet.

And yes, as crazy as it sounds, I got up and headed to my normal workout at 6A this morning. What can I say, the more things change, the more they stay the same!

Warmup
800m jog
10 pass thrus
10 OHS
10 Whirly birds
Cobra Stretch
10 push ups
10 Ring Rows

Skill
Dead Lift
Double Unders

WOD
5 RFT
20 DUs
10 KTE
10 Deadlifts (155# – 70% of your max)
time: 15:26

So my time was not stellar but Coach Mark required (read: forced me) to do actual double unders during the WOD. Although I can do a few in a row, I am not good at them by any means. It definitely slowed me down and add in super heavy DLs and gymnastics less than 12 hours earlier. Well, you get the idea. Am I all about the excuses or what? It’s ok to whine if you put in the work — right?
