Step Up and Be Better

I came across this post from CrossFit yesterday:

I’m sitting in a Mexican restaurant that, one year ago, was packed and thriving at lunch. Now? Ghost town. What changed? Nothing … and that’s the problem. A new, similar restaurant moved into town. A little more expensive, but cleaner, and with better service and better food. If this owner had sought to up his game a little bit due to new competition, this place might still be packed, instead of being a lesson on expecting people to stay with you.

And after reading it, I’m like YES! Totally true — and that’s why you have to be constantly improving, staying in the game and stay humble. There is always going to be someone that is prettier, smarter, happier, richer, willing to work harder, or just more talented than you –at least in certain things. If you are focusing on what makes you better or your business better –and not on those other people– then you are ahead of the battle. What happens is people get comfortable, or burned out, or lazy and begin to believe that they don’t have to worry. The truth is, in this day and age –with technology the way it is– things change in the blink of an eye. Who succeeds depends on who’s stepping up – period. So – Step Up in all aspects of your life. If you have to pick one and gradually step up –that’s fine. The key is to move forward and improve. Doesn’t matter if it’s all at once, or in pieces. Good things attract more good things.

I have been doing a lot of reading about the differences age plays in getting and staying fit. The reality is that a forty year old will not be able to compete with a twenty-five year old even if they are in the best shape of their life in any fair way. As you age, recovery definitely takes longer. I have experienced the feeling of competition when the kid next to me is starting to lap me in an AMRAP. And I’m like WTF! But I have been trying very hard to realize that they are in their TWENTIES –never had any kids, have not yet put on years of wear and tear– they can go out drinking, come home, sleep two hours and run a marathon the next day in many cases. I am lucky if I can even stay up past 10 PM on a weekend!  It all goes back to perspective and your inner dialogue. It doesn’t mean that I can’t work my ass off to keep up –but I have to be realistic in what progress and intensity will look like in my world. It won’t look like that twenty five year old girls –that’s for damn sure.

Be Confident

I found this blog, starting to talk about CrossFitters that are over age 40 and just some of the differences in perspective, needs and coaching required: CROSSFITTERS OF A CERTAIN AGE. Some interesting stuff to read — although I am only 29 <cough, cough>.
