Eat Right & Stay Fit – It will pay off

Been a very busy weekend –but today, I had a PR. I did 11 strict pull ups in a WOD round! STRICT PULL UPs! I was so happy.  To me pull-ups are a sign of real strength – when I started over 5+ years ago, I couldn’t do ONE! That made my day and it’s only 8AM!

Yesterday, at Highbar Crossfit, UFC fighter and Silver Medal Olympian Sara McMann stopped by to get some training in with Coach Dan. How cool is it that I get to be coached by the same coach that helped a professional athlete get to the Olympics? Dan is becoming quickly my favorite coach — he’s funny, yet knows how to push me. I have learned a ton under him already. The other day, he recorded me doing my cleans and we reviewed it together after class to talk about things I need to focus on. It makes all the difference when you are a more advanced athlete.

TucsonI also went in on Saturday – got my last lift of the week in – Bench press, and then did a quick WOD that just about killed me. Coming  back from vacation is not easy. I took a full week off in Arizona, and ate with abandon – so I definitely paid for it upon my return. But I seriously think everyone should take time off to just relax, have fun and quit worrying about your day to day life. It renews and refreshes you. It almost is like a reset on your perspective. I got to reconnect with my kiddos and family, take in some beautiful scenery, and get some much needed Vitamin D. I forgot how beautiful Tucson, Arizona is…the mountains, the sunsets. It takes your breath away despite the hot oven heat.

I was thinking about my trip to AZ this morning. Both Scott and I have parents that live there — my Dad in the Phoenix area, and his family in Tucson. Our parents are getting up there in years and spending time with them reminds me of how important it is to take care of yourself now – because it pays off long term.

Our parents who are over 70+ have a myriad of health issues that not only impact their overall health status, but impact their mobility and their mental health. After spending days with them, I made sure to talk with HB and Nate about how important it is to stay fit and eat healthy. I get that it was a different generation, and all the stuff we know today wasn’t common back then – but I have to believe had they taken steps to make sure they stayed fit and eat better, they wouldn’t be where they are today.

My mom has always been active and it shows –she doesn’t look her age and is still active. I know it’s because she doesn’t sit still — always looking to get a walk in or do some activity. You have to invest in the time now, or face the consequences later.
