It was only me and another guy for boxing this morning which meant that Coach Mike had us work in the ring instead of on the heavy bag. It is so much harder to spar with your instructor – so much harder! Not only do you have to be quick on your feet at all times, you also have to be quick thinking too. In the ring, Mike works with us on our form and technique which is where I need to work. I am strong but once I learn how to use all the momentum and power possible to hit -watch out.
Here is a good site for some boxing info and tips: ExpertBoxing.com
Yesterday was the first day of school for kids in Loudoun County, Virginia which includes my two kiddos! And, although I love summer because we don’t have to rush around in the morning to get them off, I appreciate the routine of the school year too. I think kids are happier when they are in a learning environment and challenged.

Don’t forget to enter the One Direction Looks Collection Giveaway that I highlighted on my blog this weekend.
A few weeks ago, I took HB to her first concert – One Direction at Nationals Stadium. It was just as you would imagine it would be — lots of young girls, screaming, crying, singing along in their 1D schwag. There were a ton of Moms bopping along and Dads sitting in their seats wondering how they got roped into taking their daughters.
I’m not going to lie — I really enjoyed the event. It brought back a lot of memories of being a Duran Duran loving tween. And my 12 year old daughter LOVED it.
I took a lot of photos during the show – click on the concert pic below to see my One Direction photo gallery on Facebook.
One Direction “The Looks Collection”
One Direction seems to be taking over the world just like Duran Duran did in the 80’s. Case in point, just released:

It’s my rest day today –hip hop hooray!
Last night, I came across this blog post: How K-Cups Might Damage Your Metabolism, Reproductive Health, and Cause Cancer. I love my Keurig and use it often but the info in the post has me questioning this common kitchen tool.
“very little is known about the longterm effects of consuming these substances in low doses day in, day out for years and years.”
Let’s be honest though – we don’t need research to tell us that it’s probably not good for us long term. The issue for me is what my friend Adam commented to me when I shared this link: “I say keep using the Keurig. Something tells me only massive amounts could really affect you. It’s great to be mindful of what goes in but all this stuff floating around online is typically glorified, taken out of context, and causes unnecessary hysteria. Why not do what you can (like you do) and forget worrying about every microgram that goes in. I’m sure if you keep that up you’ll have a long, healthy, happy life.”
What say you all? I do see his point – just about everything we do now a days has some hazardous implication. Did you see the smog in China? Heck they shouldn’t even breathe anymore without wearing a protective mask. All of this info can cause a lot of stress and hysteria. I told someone the other day that if I took every supplement people have recommended I take – there wouldn’t be enough hours in the day. Do what you can, with what you have – do your homework and weight the risks to make a decision based on what’s best for you. Period.

I have not been feeling myself the past few days — like I have a bug or something. I left in the middle of the workout yesterday because I was throwing up and then took a sick day from work and slept most of the day. This morning, I’m not sure how I have feel. Still not 100% but better. I have been on these antibiotics for almost two months now and frankly, I think they are killing my system. I need to get better for my big 200 mile relay race next week.
Have you read this article? Why We’re Motivated to Exercise. Or Not.
Although the findings suggest a genetic disposition to motivation to exercise, it’s not meant to be used as an excuse. Choice can be a very strong leader in change.
Behavior, he says, remains a mix of innate tendencies and personal choice. So, even if it is in your nature to enjoy long hours on the couch, you can choose to get up and move.
It’s been such a crazy few days emotionally and that could be also tied to how I am feeling physically, but one thing I keep remembering is that there are a ton of good people out there, helping one another, living great, blessed lives. Good, kind people who cherish every day and look to share their inspiration and support with others. I am finding a lot of comfort reading the stories of the amazing every day heroes who sprang into action during the Boston bombing and how their heroism saved many people. That’s the stuff I am focusing on — and the amazing stories of the tragic victims. The world lost some special people this week.

So I’m very excited because tonite, CrossFit Impavidus is doing a field trip. We are headed to a real gymnastics gym for a bit of an adult open gym time. I am constantly challenging myself to try the wonders that are gymnastics. Having grown up with ZERO motivation to do any of it, and many missed opportunities to learn, I am finding a real joy in learning how to hang upside down! It’s going to be super fun to really get to use the tools of a real gymnast tonite and see what I can do. I will definitely take some pics and keep you posted.
In preparation for tonite, Coach Jerry had us do some gymnastics today, as usual. I love how when he gets to the box in the AM, he likes to ask one of us what we would like to try today. Like any of us have a clue! We always laugh and say, Handstands?!! And he says — nope, we did that already and finds something else tricky for us. I know you are thinking, our version of fun is a big off kilter –and yes this is at 6A!
10 Pass thrus
10 Whirly Birds
10 Good Mornings
10 Hamstring Stretches
10 Kick to Handstands
Re: my handstands I am getting really good at. I no longer need a kick start and have stayed away from the wall for more than 5s at a pop. Thinking back to Jan/Feb/Mar time frame, when I was too scared to even try it until Coach Marc got in my face and said –‘JUST COMMIT!’. It really has gotten me through a lot lately. You have to commit yourself to whatever you are doing — and sure enough, it comes through!
Skin the Cat
Wall Balls (10#)
So the issue today was that I went too light on the SDHP, so when I got tired, I lost form and bent my arms too early. Key thing is to let your hips do the work and pop ’em and let them push the weight up. When you bend your arms too early, you break the momentum and your arms do the work! So, I should have gone heavier so that I couldn’t bend them too early and force my hips to do their thing — lesson learned!
When I went to Blogher’11, I was lucky enough to attend a Gatorade event about young athletes, proper nutrition and how we, as parents, can help them ‘Become’ the great athletes they are destined to be. During the event, I was also fortunate to meet Brandi Chastain . For those of you too young to remember, Brandi Chastain is a professional American soccer player and is a former member of the United States women’s national soccer team. She is considered one of the great women soccer players in the USA . You may remember her from the famous sports bra-baring photo that appeared on all the major news magazines like Time and Newsweek after the US National Soccer Team’s win at the 1999 Women’s World Cup.
Brandi Chastain spoke at our event about leading by example. “If you want your kids to be active, get active.” For those that follow me, this is a very big deal to me as well. I have seen way too many women lose themselves once they become a wife and mother. It is never too late to start — learning a cartwheel at 40 was a very humbling experience but one that has become a highlight of my year!
I stopped and chatted with her after the event and found her to be very welcoming and interested in my story. I didn’t get the sense she was ‘just being nice’ either. She inspired me even more to continue and push myself further —
Last week, Gatorade asked if I would be interested in helping get the word out about their BECOME pledge — and if the cause isn’t enough reward, they have provided me with an autographed soccer ball from Brandi Chastain to give-away!! How cool is that?
