I’m Getting a Nike+ Fuelband

0

What a long week it has been –and cold as crap.

Scott and I ordered Nike+ Fuelband to help re-jumpstart my motivation to lose some of the poundage I put on during the holidays. I don’t feel good in my body right now and definitely notice it during some of my workouts. Also, my clothes are fitting but just not like they used to. Some of it is that my CrossFit body shape is still developing, but most of it is because I have not been keeping my eating on point.  So while not a magic wand, I am hoping it will encourage me to be more on point.

Tonight I am helping host at our CrossFit Impavidus gym a Ladies Night WOD. I am trying to promote more girl power, support and friendship at our gym by coordinating a workout and social event, where we can root one another on and then chat and enjoy some appetizers and wine! And it’s themed too! The ladies are going to don their favorite 80’s wear.

Time Flies: It’s Thanksgiving Already

TurkeysHard to believe Thanksgiving is next week –November is almost done. Crazy how fast time flies. I am sore, sore, sore –split jerks, tabata situps and then today, one of those fancy girls: Cindy.

I did CrossFit Benchmark: Cindy using butterfly pull ups and ended up doing almost a round more than last time! PROGRESS!

Checking Off My Fitness To Do List

One Day at a Time

I gotta say things are certainly getting better as we get closer to the end of the week. Sometimes I just need to let it out into the universe –all the stress, emotion and anger — and maybe it releases some positive energy and allows me to break through stuff that ultimately was holding me back.  Who knows — maybe there really is no real world order and it’s all just chance and happenstance.

Last night before I coached the Kids class, one of my fellow CrossFit athlete friends found out that I indeed have struggled with climbing a rope. I realize it’s all technique and once you get that down pat, its not the hardest thing to do. If you know me, you know I have issues with body awareness, technique, left/right sequence. Something must have happened to me during a formative moment growing up that stunted my ability to tell my right from my left.  I still have to do that L thing with my index finger and thumb. What?!!  Don’t judge — we all have issues.  Anyway, she said come here and let me show you. I tried to get out of it – I had to prep for my kids class and my pal Tony Blauer had stopped by for a quick workout while he was in town. Do you think I wanted to embarrass myself in front of him?  Um – no.

Anna doesn’t take No for an answer with anything — so there I was, getting roped in to trying to climb it. (Pun was clever right?)  The way she showed me was different and guess what? It worked! So — guys, I can now climb a rope. I have to practice to make it go smoother but I got halfway up that darn thing!! I needed that win this week! A big thank you to Anna who first, didn’t take No for an answer and second, showing me a way that made sense to me and third, It WORKED!!

But it doesn’t stop there folks, this AM I also had a win. We did one of the famous ladies of CrossFit – Cindy. And for the first time, I did Cindy completely RX’d (as prescribed)! No modifications, no bands! The way it was created, imagined and written. What an awesome feeling tackling two milestones and displays of progress in one week –and one that started out as a really rough, don’t want to continue the week sort of way.  Goes to show you, you never know what will happen day to day. One day at time…

Last year this time, I couldn’t do a Kipping Pull up at all, I couldn’t climb a rope — this year both can be checked off my To Do List!

Weekend of Busy

0

I have been beyond busy this weekend — it started Friday evening with Scott and I heading over to a Happy Hour to say goodbye to one of his co-workers. It was a good time and I got to hang with people that I don’t see very often and dinner was paid for — Bonus!

Saturday morning was the Whole Life Challenge kickoff. We have almost 40 people signed up for this challenge and I know we are going to see some big changes and lifestyle transformations.  It’s going to be quite an adjustment for so many of them — but if they really stick to it, it will turn out better than they can imagine! I sound like an infomercial don’t I?

After the challenge was over, I stayed a bit later and Coach Nate met me to help me with some Oly Lifting I am struggling with. He and I worked on the Oly Snatch for an hour or so and I think I made some progress. It’s amazing what small tweaks to your form will do to make the impossible possible. Thanks Nate for coming in to help! Much Appreciated.

Then it was time to get ready for Hannah’s 10th birthday party sleepover with 7, 9-10 year old girls! It was loud, fun and emotional – just like Girls that age!  Scott and I woke up extra tired Sunday morning but fun was had by all.

Sunday – the girls headed to their homes and I headed to CrossFit again to get some folks started on the Challenge. They weren’t able to make the Saturday kickoff, so we got them all set yesterday.  Then Kim and Liz met me and we did the Cindy workout, with a slight tweak. Instead of 20m we did 15m.

I did 9rounds+15reps and had to climb up on a box each time, which I referred to as the Mountain.

CrossFit: A Breakthrough Happens When You Least Expect It

1

The elevator to success is out of order. You’ll have to use the stairs… one step at a time. – Joe Girard

I had a huge breakthrough today that I needed so badly. I finally can say that I did kipping pull ups – no band! Full on Kipping Pull Ups. Something did just click like they all said it would and boy what a difference it makes. We met up with CrossFit Lady: Cindy today. Last time I did Cindy – I did 15 rounds with a blue band. It was 3 months ago, here’s my post about it. Notice how the last paragraph talks about how frustrated I was —

Today – 14 rounds, fully on my own with no help from lil ole blue band. Let me tell you though – I do have to work on my breathing asthma exercises because boy, it really took the wind out of me. I can’t tell you how energized I am after today. I tell myself all the time, the fact that I even get off my butt every morning and do CrossFit is amazing but everyone needs to have proof of progress, of it really working.  And after having those weekend pics screw with my mind, I needed this so badly.

It’s hard sometimes to remember that I am not the same age as many of the athletes working out beside me so when I see them progress faster, it annoys me. I mean I am happy for them — in awe of many of them really, but I want it too.  You know what’s next right? DOUBLE UNDERS unbroken — that will happen this year. Mark my words! I am flying high right now, just giddy.

Here’s a great article shared by my friend Laurie over at Chronic Wellness:
The 8 Most Nutrient Dense Foods on Earth

YES Chocolate is on the list —

We all know which foods we do best to avoid (right?). Despite the alluring appeal of Oreos, Mountain Dew or McAnything, processed foods provide little nutrition and a whole lot of risks. But when it comes to the good stuff—what are the best foods to put into our bodies? While experts all agree we need a variety of foods for a healthy diet, do you know which are the healthiest of the bunch? The answers may surprise and delight you.  Read on…

Monday, Monday

It’s back to my routine. My husband has returned from his work/fun trip to Vegas. It’s been a long week without him and of course one of my kids gets sick. I took her to the Dr early Saturday morning –and skipped my normal workout and sure enough she has strep. We spent the day inside. Sometimes you forget how good it is to force a day when you slow down. I did some organizing, reading, catching up on laundry! She started to feel like herself yesterday!

I have to go get a mammogram this morning. Hard to believe but I’m 40 now and it’s time to start routine screening. I’m nervous mainly because I have no idea what to expect. The joys of getting older!

At CrossFit today, we tackled a lady I just saw on the 10th. Her name is Cindy.

We use a program called beyond the whiteboard to keep track of our workouts so we can see improvements and compare performance –to put it in perspective, the top guy doing this workout did 43 Rounds!! I did 15!! Yowsas!

And once again the elusive kipping pullup got me again. I am sick of this –and have decided I have to spend some serious time working on it. I can’t let this keep getting the best of me!

CrossFit Girl: Cindy

I woke up this morning and that little guy I call the sleep monster was trying to talk me out of going — I tried to bargain out of going this AM –oh I will go on Friday instead of today but then the alarm went off and instinctively I got up and started to get ready. I know come Friday, I will be happy that I get to sleep in. Also we did one of the ladies of CrossFit — and I hate/love doing those ladies. And now I am done – and happy that I went and ready to take on my day.

Meeting Cindy – again.

CrossFit WOD: Cindy

1

I went a little blonde crazy yesterday. I have been too busy (aka lazy) to get my hair done lately but finally bit the bullet and took care of it yesterday evening.  While I was there, my stylist was telling me her brother in law is a war veteran and loves CrossFit. One thing she said struck me as funny — she said that from what she can tell — Those who get into CrossFit, well it seems to take over their life. I wonder what folks out there think about that statement. Is that bad thing?  Working on your fitness in a healthy way, hanging out with like minded people, having fun, getting healthy and learning about healthy eating? Doesn’t sound like such a bad thing to have take over your life to me…

I can’t even imagine not being fit anymore. I think my body would go into ultra shock. I can vividly remember the feeling of my back always being tight and just an overall feeling of uncomfort in my own body. The only un-comfort I have now is when I am sore and wiped out from a hard day’s work. Now that’s the way it should be — if you currently at a point where your body is failing you because of your own doing, get up and do something. It really is about taking that first step. The rest will fall into place if you really want it to.

Another meeting of one of the CrossFit ladies today — Fran on Monday, Cindy on Weds. Makes you wonder which ‘lady’ we will meet on Friday???

Warmup

10 Push-ups
15 Squats
total: 16 Rounds

I did the first 2 rounds of Pull Ups with no band, but since I can’t yet grasp the Kip Pull Up – I moved to use the Blue Band to help. In our box, the blue band is the least help you can get with a band. Once I did that — pull ups are a breeze. I am frustrated that learning this kipping pull up is taking a lot longer than it should. It’s not strength, its timing for me. I am trying to do some visualization of it at night in addition to just practicing when I can. I know its just a matter of time before I get it but it really isn’t something that can be taught. Another challenge for me is my hands are killing me — the calluses are uncomfortable. I know it’s a sign of working hard, but can’t we come up with another way to show signs of that? HA!
