The Bonds of Fitness


Lidia Beer - CrossFit MastersI hit up a boxing class last night and then headed to Ashburn CrossFit this morning to workout with a dear friend I havent seen in over five years. I have written about Lidia previously and what an inspiration and kickass chick she is. It’s one of the greatest things about finding my fitness passion – meeting and bonding with the most amazing people.  Many of them have become very dear to me and even though I don’t see them regularly, they continue to inspire me and motivate me to be better than I was yesterday. I mean – come on now, these are strong, bad ass chicks. If I let myself go to pot after all this time – I think they would kick my ass. Not only are they amazing people – they help keep me accountable. It’s a win that keeps on giving…

As you probably know, I don’t do CrossFit regularly anymore.  The change was brought on partially by burn out. I was not getting the joy or seeing the results I used to from CrossFit. I also felt that my body wasn’t recovering like it used to which was causing me to not have as much fun while I was there. My shoulders weren’t healing either because of the constant stress on them. It’s only been since I stopped completely, have I regained range of motion in my right shoulder.

It is nice to revisit CrossFit every now and again and today it was quite a workout – a chipper.

Ashburn CrossFit In CrossFit, a chipper is usually a combo of 5 to 10 exercises designed to push metabolic conditioning. This morning’s chipper looked like this…

  • 50 Wall Balls (20/14)
  • 40 Push Ups
  • 30 Medball Cleans (20/14)
  • 20 Burpees
  • 10 Pull Ups
  • 20 Burpees
  • 30 Medball Cleans
  • 40 Push Ups
  • 50 Wall Balls
    (20 min cap)

I chose to do it with a 10# med ball and finished at 19:37.  Yeah, Ouch. I am  now at work and the soreness is creeping in. It hurts just to walk.  I don’t know why, but it always surprises me at how sore I get when I switch up workouts even though I workout all the time!

I have to admit it was a great way to start my day. A group of strong ladies, a lot of laughs and creating a sweat festival.

As a final sign off on today’s post – I want to wish my smart, sassy and super adorable niece Amelia a Happy Birthday. I wish I lived closer so I could be in her life more, but here I am living in ‘Grassyland’ (that’s what she calls Virginia bc we have a lot of grass and San Fran does not).

I Love You More Than Burpees


I seriously feel like I could sleep for days. When I got home yesterday – I took an 1.5 hour nap, got up for a bit and went to bed at 9p. It was super hard to get up this morning and for a brief moment, I thought about hitting snooze. Heck I did hit snooze, but four minutes into it, I got up.  I am so inspired and motivated again to do the work, that I want to get my workout in. Now that I am seeing real results, I want to see how far it will take me. It’s so awesome to be this excited again. And not to brag, but my shoulders and arms are looking quite cut.


I have written before about my friend Lidia and how inspiring and strong she is. Frankly, she’s amazing and can’t possibly be human! Here is a video I found online from this year’s CrossFit Games of her getting a PR! Another example of how amazing she is –

I am going to see a bunch of people I haven’t seen in years tomorrow at a BBQ planned six months ago. When I worked at AOL and the Kids area – KOL -they were such a tight group and the lot of them are gathering at someone’s house to reconnect. I am so excited and happy that someone took the initiative to set this up and stick with it. We don’t do nearly enough re-connecting in person in the age of technology in my humble opinion. So my advice to you for this upcoming week – -reconnect with someone! You would be surprised at the joy it can bring you!

Today we did some strength maintenance – so it was bench press. And then a Met-con workout -they never seem to get easier!

2011 CrossFit Games: Here’s to Some Amazing, Strong CrossFit Chicks I know!


A few of my friends will be at the CrossFit Games competing and I am so excited for them —

First up is my friend Lidia Beer. If you ever want to meet an inspiration — Meet this Kick ass woman. She gives meaning to being in shape. She’s definitely a great athlete, competitor, but an even better supporter and cheerleader of other woman giving it their all. I am so proud of her and she will do whatever it takes to complete her WOD. She’s been doing actual CrossFit since she moved to North Carolina at CrossFit Coastal.

Lidia is one of the amazing women I have met since I started my fitness journey. She is probably one of the most memorable as well. Super fun, super strong, super bossy — I love this lady. Finish Strong Lidia — 3,2,1…Go!


Next up is a  new friend — Christmas Abbot. I met her at the CrossFit Games Regionals and was struck by her strength and how nice she was. These people are world class athletes

 and for them to be so open and down to earth was a great surprise. And then she was at my CrossFit Certification course and I liked her even more. She just is a really bad ass woman –strong, in tip top shape, has tattoos and I think she would be fun to hang out with. She lives in North Carolina which is also where Lidia lives — Is there a secret club I don’t know about in NC?

Christmas is part of CrossFit Raleigh and they are competing in the team games. Their first workout is —

For time:
Move 15 sandbags (1,700 lbs.) 200 yards
There will be a 6-log obstacle at the 50-yard line and a 4-foot wall at the end. The sandbags must be moved from the start line, over the logs, and over the wall. Once all the sandbags are over the wall, they must be returned to their original position, passing over the wall and logs again.

Death by Pull Ups and other things…


Do you remember my friend Lidia who has always been one of my biggest cheerleaders and she moved to Nc? Well guess who made it to the National CrossFit Games?  Yup – Ms Lidia – Queen Bee herself. I am beyond proud of her — WTG Lidia!

I have the most amazing people in my life — inspiring and caring – -and many of them are in my life directly related to me pursing a fit and healthy path.  Think about that as a great incentive to head down that path yourself!

Today’s workout was called Death by Pull Ups. Just the name alone says so much, right?  Some days I think to myself while I am in the midst of the WOD — not only do I get up for this torture daily, I pay for it! 🙂 HA! It’s awesome.

Death by Pull Ups
With a continuously running clock do one pull-up the first minute, two pull-ups the second minute, three pull-ups the third minute… continuing as long as you are able.
Total: 4, then did blue band to 11

For me that was not too long which was frustrating. I am still working on finding my kip. I can do the swing no problem, its the transition afterwards that messes me up. In my head I know what I need to do – I just gotta keep practicing. Practice Makes Better! It was not one of my best days. Sometimes you need some challenging days to make the good days that much better.

And in keeping with the true spirit of livin’ fit and sore — I have been struggling keeping Paleo. Gluten is not a problem anymore. I’m off of that stuff no issues. It’s more the sugar/sweet stuff and have noticed the reasoning I am doing in my head when I choose to eat it. And I know many people out there will read this and say, oh please. But eating crap really does affect everything you do day to day and that’s how the weight creeps back on. I don’t have the type of metabolism that can adjust to it, so it goes right to my mid section and that’s not ok – i bought a bikini this year and I am going to wear it. So if it goes right to my mid section, all of those people at the pool are not going to appreciate what they see. So it’s really for all of you in Ashburn VA that I need to stay focused. Sometimes, me owning up to it here helps me regain control — Accountability really does work.

Don’t go Lidia!


One of most favorite ladies from Plumbline who has been one of the most supportive, fun and impressive people I have met is moving. After the plane pull she heads to her new home in North Carolina. You have NEVER and I mean NEVER met anyone like Lidia B – aka Queen B. You would never guess she is in her 50’s – she’s got a body that won’t quit, is strong as shit mentally and physically, and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet — she’s also very bossy but you get used to that!

She is the one that rocks all the boot camp sessions, finishing in the top every time! She has run marathons, races, mud challenges — She takes on any challenge, never quits — She has been one a stable rock in our group and I know everyone in our 545A camp is going to miss her more than words can convey. When I was saying my millionth goodbye to her in the parking lot after camp this morning, I started to tear up, because I have always found it very comforting to workout with Lidia. She is someone you can count on to support you — even jumping back into the workout she just finished so that you had someone to get through it with.

Many women when they get into large groups for some reason become less than supportive of each other. Not us Plumbline Ladies –that’s what is so special. All walks of life, careers, ages, fitness levels — come together at 545A and laugh, support and workout! And that’s a big part of why it has worked for us!

Best of Luck Lidia — and don’t be a stranger! Visit often!

Queen B – the big cheerleader


Holy Cow am I sore! Yesterday’s ‘great’ workout has left me very very sore! I am going to rest up so I can ready to resume Plumbline Training in the AM.

Friday night – we had a small happy hour to get some of the Plumbline Training ladies together to do a Happy Hour send off to one of our team  – Lidia. She is moving to North Carolina and happens to be a very special member of our group.  She’s in awesome shape, super strong and one of the biggest cheerleaders of the group. Always supportive and encouraging – she will be missed in a big way.

She always pushes me when I work out with her and I love it.  I am not sure what we will do without our Queen B.  I have said this before – we have a really special group of Plumbline training ladies and losing one is noticed.
