Strength WOD at CFI

I decided to try an evening class at Crossfit Impavidus to switch things up last night. The only issue is that I have to get up the next morning and workout. It’s tough on the body.

Last night with trainer Nate was a strength session. Nate is a good trainer – he goes over form and really pushes you when you need it but also realizes when it’s enough.  So far, I have really liked all the trainers at CFI – each have their own style but all good.

sampson stretch
10 pass thrus
10 pull ups
10 air squats
20 DU/Jump Ropes

Front Squat

Front Squats
(b) means that the reps were broken. I did 2 then had to drop the bar, did another 2, and then 1 more for a total of 5. I have bruises on the ends of my shoulders from this lift but that’s the price you pay to be strong. 140# for someone like me is pretty good –it’s more than my body weight, so I’m good with it.

We finished the workout with some mobility work. It’s amazing how doing some stretching with a band can really make all the difference in how you feel. We did some shoulder pulls and some hamstring work with the blue band. Here’s to mobility!!

It’s the small moments that mean so much

Sleep does a body good

In addition to me being a bit under the weather, my real job has been insanely busy. I work for an education company and the time before Back to school is our busiest. We are feverishly working trying to get our ducks in a row ready for the upcoming school year.  It seems that everyone around me is crankier than usual including me. I just don’t even have the slightest bit of patience and it is taking a toll on the people around me.

I did get to see my boy Nate perform in his Kindergarten play today. They did Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes and he was the cat in the fiddle. That did bring my spirits up a bit but in order to make it to the performance, I had to leave an important meeting earlier than I and the participants would have liked.   It’s the pressure of the working parent but moments like those don’t happen forever and they grow up way too fast – I am not willing to miss a thing!

I skipped my usual Thursday workout to get extra sleep since I am not feeling so great. It is somewhat out of character for me but I realized recently that while I love getting exercise and being fit, I can’t get crazy about it.  Sleep does a body good too!

I may go out for a run tomorrow morning depending on how I feel. My goal is some sort of formal exercise 5x a week and sometimes I even go to 6. I know it’s close to an obsession.

A relaxing weekend…

I wanted to get a run in early because it’s supposed to be highs in the 90s today.  I headed out and one of my neighbors told me about this cut through that will take me directly on the trail.  I have lived in my neighborhood for 11 years and never knew about this — I am excited. I know i have mentioned that I wouldn’t take the trail solo if I didn’t have to but there were a ton of people on the trail this morning so I felt it was ok.  I did about 3 miles. It wasn’t my best run but I did it. It was so hot and I didn’t have any water with me. I think if I did, I would have held out a bit longer.  I have a waist belt that holds a bottle of water so maybe I will try that out.

Nate and Grant’s party was a success. Those boys love hanging out with each other and the rest of the boys were great. It still is draining having to host that sort of thing even when you are sharing the job with someone else.  We then headed home and then had a friend’s 40th birthday party celebration to attend. The kids had one of their favorite babysitters and we headed out for a lovely evening with friends.  I have been eating non-stop so I am not looking forward to hitting the scale tomorrow morning. I am lucky I am not a drinker — the combo of drinking and the food — would be a disaster this weekend.

Today is busy too. I have lunch plans with some friends, then Nate and his pals are headed to the park to play a game of pickup football. I just want to rest!

hope you are enjoying your Sunday!

best buds forever

I don’t have a lot to say today if you can believe it. Another gorgeous day ahead of us here in Northern Virginia. We are co-hosting Nate’s 6 th birthday party with his best buddy Grant.  These 2 have insisted on having a party together for the last 4 years – both were born on the same day, same year and have been super close buds since they were babies.  It will be interesting to see what next year holds for them when they both head off to their respective public schools and will no longer attend the same one every day. I have a feeling they will continue to have the same bond — they are so different in personalities but yet just really like each other.  It’s a wonderful thing to see…

Hope you have a great day and do something active!  I am leaving you with information on desserts – substitutes you can make to enjoy and indulge a bit but not so much that you completely go off the deep end.

Happy 6th Birthday Baby Nate!

6 years ago today Nathaniel Ryan Hoaglund was born. When he arrived he was whiter than anything I have ever seen. His hair and eyebrows were so white, it didn’t even look like he had any. From that day forward, life has been more fun and meaningful for our family. From the moment we started to meet his personality, he has had us laughing.

From the funny face he would make when he before he was 12 months old when we asked him to make it, to the “stealing” incidents – I have never laughed so hard.  Even this morning, I was telling him some memories from his birth and he says: Mommy, you keep talking and talking and talking. And then smiles at me like he knows he’s funny. Or the time I got mad at him and without any prompting he looked me in the eye and said: Mommy, I love you so much, and you are so pretty and I like your dress. The kid was like 4 YEARS old!

He loves to snuggle, and is really inquisitive and fearless at times. He makes friends easily and is easy going. The other day I took him for ice cream and I said – what if they don’t have what you want? He said: then I will get something else. Every day I learn something new about him.

He’s a good boy that likes to be naughty at times – which as long as it’s legal – keeps life interesting. I love my Baby Nate. And he will always be my baby. He asks Even when I live with someone else? I say YES – Always. Even when I am like 6 ft tall and taller than you? Yes – Always.

Happy Birthday Nate Dogg!
