Baby it’s cold outside – like 8 degrees without the windchill. Talk about a polar vortex in the Northern VA area. I swear last week, it was in the 60’s. Such crazy weather shifts, it’s no wonder I can’t seem to get over this chest crud cold I have had since right before the new year. You know what helps break up the crud? Exercise! This morning – we did a bunch of suicides and sprints in addition to 8 rounds of boxing. By the end, I was hacking up my lungs which was actually a good thing because it is clearing the gunk out.
Did you know there are some recent studies that show being cold can actually lead to weight loss and improved health? The Atlantic recently published, The Benefits of Being Cold, highlighting that perhaps year round warmth, something many of us enjoy regularly, may be affecting our body weight and health. Read the piece – it makes a lot of sense “Seven million years of evolution were dominated by two challenges: food scarcity and cold.” Today, for most of us, neither of those things are real challenges to us on a regular basis and our bodies adapt to changes – some for the better, some for the worse. So, while it’s frightfully cold outside – take time to appreciate being chilly and realize that it’s perhaps better for you.

I was driving home this morning and listening to the radio. A McDonald’s commercial came on talking about updates to the Happy Meal. The Happy Meal will now include fries AND apple slices for a ‘well balanced meal’. Isn’t that fabulous!! Now come on — if you are going to sell it, don’t add in the crap about well balanced meal. You and I know fries don’t make it balanced at all. The things marketers will try — words in fancy combinations don’t make it any more or less true.
Last night, while watching Tv before bed – I took my Lacrosse Ball and rolled out my back and shoulders. The past week, I have had stiffness and general soreness all around them. As much as it hurt, it felt great and afterwards I could totally feel the difference. I am telling you — GET a LACROSSE ball today!!
I woke up to heavy fog and humidity, which for an asthmatic = hard to breathe weather and of course we had to run!!
25 Double Unders/150 Singles
10 Whirly Birds
10 Front, Back, Around (With your arms)
gymnastics (kick to handstands, handstand leans to help you get used to shifting your weight for handstand walks)
5 rounds for time of:
400 m Run
25 Good Mornings
25 Sit-up (abmat)s
Not my best showing. I had issues with breathing this morning and the thick foggy air and Good Mornings seemed like torture. The prescribed (RX) weight is your body weight and I did 65lbs. I sure as heck didn’t think I could handle my body weight, doing 25 reps of good mornings. To compare, I did 50 Good Mornings at 45lbs during Saturday’s workout. I couldnt walk normally for days –my hamstrings were Yelling!! I can imagine what the next day or so will bring after today’s torture.
CrossFit Impavidus is closed on Saturday for a special charity event they are doing — so I am thinking of taking it easy tomorrow and Saturday. I can tell my body is tired and may be trying to tell me to take it easy. This is a good opportunity to do that — take a long weekend and do some general stretching, mobility and get outside but not do actual high intensity movements. Rest can be just as important as exercise at times — this may be one of those times.
Oh that Mother Nature — it was 60-70 degree temps last week. This morning, I woke up to snow and ice on the ground. And I woke up normal time, got dressed and ready to workout and lo and behold it was canceled! I will go to a night class this evening to get my workout in — just goes to show you – go with the flow and Momma Nature constantly reminds us all of that.
I saw this video on The Clothes Make the Girl and I thought it was worth sharing here – I love Push Ups, so any tips to help them be more efficient are welcome –
How to Do a Push-up
Woke up at 5a as usual this AM and we had about 9in on the ground. I had shoveled a bit last night so it was possible that I was going to be able to leave for boot camp this AM. Scotty told me that I shouldn’t consider it — the roads looked icy but crazy me decided to delay the workout and go to the 645A class. Much to Scott’s chagrin, he got his snow crap on and both of us headed out to shovel the driveway. We had a snow dam at the end of the drive from the plow and that was what proved to be the toughest part. I don’t mind shoveling – it’s hard manual labor that makes for a good workout.
While we were shoveling, one of the neighbors was walking by (it’s 545a) and I said ‘What are you doing?‘. She told me she had to get to work and didn’t have time to shovel out the drive. So I said grab a shovel – let’s get this done and I will drive you to work. We finished in about 15m flat – we got in the car and she made it to work on time. It’s about Teamwork!
When I got to boot camp -Kimmy was the only person who had showed up for the 545A class and it looked like i was going to be the lone camper for the 645A but 5m into the workout — Greg showed up and both of us did the camp together!
Today’s workout included hang snatches! Hang snatches are tough! Here’s a Crossfit Video showing you what they are:
I’m just out and about enjoying the day. The DC area is having a gorgeous weather day and I am taking full advantage of it. I am running the AOL 5K tomorrow morning so I am resting up.
I hope where ever you are – you are being active and having fun! That’s what weekends are for, right?
I am so happy to be reading more and more about corporations getting out there and encouraging FAMILIES to get moving and get fit! Here is another one:
USA TODAY is launching its first Family Fitness Challenge in June. We are working with some of the top nutrition and fitness experts in the country to create fun recreational
I went for a run outside today because when the weather is this beautiful, it’s a waste to run on a treadmill. I did about 4.5 miles and stopped at a nearby park and did step ups on a bench and push-ups using the bench as well. You don’t need fancy equipment to get a good workout – use what you have.
In a few weeks, I am scheduled to run the Bluemont Vineyard 5k and from what I understand, it’s a pretty tough race because of the hills. I also have to make sure I am ready for the race in August – Run Amuck. Summer will be here before you know it…
Springtime in Northern VA is one of my favorite times of the year. Aside from allergies, the blooming of all the cherry blossoms, flowers, trees – you just feel so much better overall. Winters here are so dreary and you forget how much better you feel once the sun is out. Every time I go visit the west coast like Cali or Arizona, I realize that one of my goals is to somehow get my family back there. I feel so good there — the sun is shining, the food tastes better — it’s good to have goals…
Make sure you get outside today and do something active. Even if it’s going for a walk with your kids. A few weeks back we all went outside and played a game of tag — just to get out some extra energy!
After 2 gorgeous, perfect weather days – I woke up to rain. It’s a nice change of pace and it’s definitely a sign of spring. I heard the weather man say possibility of Thunder Storms — Spring is here! While out shopping yesterday, I bought myself some flowers. I think having fresh flowers in your house just makes you feel happier…The picture on the left are the orange daisies I bought – I also bought some white ones. You should buy yourself some often. Whenever we go to Costco – Nate says to me – Mommy, I want to buy you some flowers and we pick some out together. He’s a charmer in training…I’m so lucky.
