Change Doesn’t Happen Overnight


What makes me so crazy in the head that a day off sounds unreasonable at times?  And the crazier thing is I am not alone – something about the CrossFit formula gets inside the heads of the many athletes and we become programmed this way. Although I do have to say that as a general rule — I take two days a week off consistently. It just doesn’t seem that way because I am at CrossFit Impavidus a lot for other things.

I need to listen to my body when it clearly tells me to slow down and take it easy. There is a little voice in my head that is LOUD as heck that tries to convince me otherwise and I find myself listening to it sometimes. Yesterday, I clearly should have slept in and not gone to workout. I felt like crap the rest of the day –just off center and woozy. I think much of it stems from dehydration if I am being critical of the situation. I don’t drink enough water to counteract the physical activity I do. Period.  Today, I am going to focus on it and see if it makes a difference.

Then it hit me. There is no secret. It’s not magic. There is no quick easy way.

It’s a change. In how you eat, live, work, play and see yourself. You can’t expect for the change to happen overnight. You can’t expect it to be easy. You can’t expect it to not to hurt. You can’t expect someone to do it for you.

I caught myself comparing my progress and looks to others this weekend and realized I was doing it – which is some progress I guess. No one else can take this journey with us — it’s our own and we can walk, run, or tip toe through it.  We have to own the decisions and actions we take. They will show up whether we like it or not — put in the work, it will sway towards the positive. Half assing it will result in half ass results. The choice and work is ours.  It’s empowering and sucky at the same time. I wish there was a clapper for it — Clap and all is right with my world. But no such luck!


A rest morning was definitely needed this morning and appreciated. I feel better although sore –and am excited for Endurance class tonight. I went for a 1mile run this weekend and I gotta be honest –it wasn’t as bad as it has been. You do get better if you practice. And with the spring weather — I’m beyond happy to get outside and get some Vitamin D.

Stuck in the Fear Loop

A few weeks ago a co-worker called me to get some advice about a work issue she has been dealing with for a while.  She has been putting up with a certain situation for a long time, enabling it to continue by not speaking up and requesting action. For anyone that knows me — It could be said that I lean a bit too much in the other direction and speak my mind fairly often and freely. It’s something that personally I need to work on — creating the right filters at the right time and being more diplomatic in some of my delivery methods. But this is not about that point!

She asked me how I handle certain situations that resemble what she is going thru and how I would handle the situation at hand.  What was clear from talking to her was that she was scared. Scared to get her boss upset, scared to talk to the head of our department, scared of what would happen to her if she did take the action — she was in what Tony Blauer calls the Fear Loop. She wasn’t only in it, she has been stuck in it for a very long time. Just going around and around the loop. So when talking to her, I automatically went into scenario mode and started asking her some questions –

Why are you doing this:

Are your intentions solid and sound? Are you trying to cause trouble or are you really earnest and believe, based on your experience that speaking up and highlighting the train wreck that may be coming is the right thing to do?

If No:

  • Don’t proceed.

If Yes:

  • What is the worst thing that can happen?  What would that look like? Would that really happen? How would you handle that?
  • What is the best thing that can come from this? What would that look like? Is that likely to happen? How would you handle that?
  • Could any other result happen that you do no expect?  What complications and/or additional actions come from your action?

Alternatives: Could there be alternative ways of handling the situation? What are the different options and scenarios around those?

After discussing all of the info and options– we both realized that the worst thing that could happen is probably not that bad, but even more — probably isn’t even going to happen. And that stepping back from going all the way to the Top Dog boss probably wasn’t the best first step and we came up with a scenario that takes into account her boss’s role and giving them the respect they deserve, while still pushing the issue and creating a situation where her boss has no choice but to either take action or she will go back to her original solution and go to his boss to address the issue.

Either way a decision was made by looking at all the possible scenarios and she can address the problem and take action. Will the outcome match what she was going for?  Its impossible to say because you have to take into account the other people and the unknown. However, those are points out of her control and she did the foundational work and made the best decision based on evaluating all the data and scenarios she had on hand at the time. It’s all you can expect and ask for when making the decision. 

Take the situation above and follow along to Tony Blauer’s model – The Cycle of Behavior and you can see she worked through the fear loop and got herself out of it and took action – in theory.  In real life dangerous situations, you have no choice but to take action. Day to day, you actually have to act on it or you end up stuck in fear — going over the different options, scenarios over and over again — resenting whats going on more and more day after day.

So many of us stay in the fear loop because we are scared. Ironic right? Scared of leaving the fear loop.   My co-worker has been trying to operate while constantly being in this loop. Can you imagine how unhealthy and unproductive and inefficient that is?- operating from a place of fear when you are making decisions and managing people.

The model above is a great resource to use when trying to figure out which way to go — follow it step by step and you will find your way out of the ole fear loop!

In order to change, you must change – or you can’t expect to see a different result than what you have been getting.

Sitting All Day: Worse For You Than You Might Think

Yes, exercise is good for you. This we know. Heaps of evidence point to the countless benefits of regular physical activity. Federal health officials recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like brisk walking, every day.

Studies show that when you adhere to an exercise regimen, you can improve your cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure and improve metabolism and levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. You can reduce diabetes risk and the risk of certain cancers. And, finally, exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight, which can boost all of these benefits even more.

But now, researchers are beginning to suspect that even if you engage in regular exercise daily, it may not be enough to counteract the effects of too much sitting during the rest of the day.

Paleo/Primal eating update


Busy day for me today – I have to drive down to Williamsburgh for a work meeting and back home — it’s a long drive but oh well .. You gotta do what you gotta do! I am glad Weds is a rest day from exercise!!

My cold is still lingering but it’s not as bad as it could have been. I’m on Day 7 of Paleo eating and so far so good.  I havent really missed eating wheat or sugar if you can believe it, nor have I been really hungry. Time will tell how my body responds to it but I do feel better overall — more energy, my face seems clearer, and my stomach definitely seems to be flatter — Could this type of eating really be what the doctor ordered??

I’m exhausted


Today was a crazy day – I took the early morning off to take care of lots of those Mommy things to get ready for the end of school – 8a dentist appointments for both kids, end of year Kindergarten conference with Nate’s teacher, Target run, First grade registration, and finally camp registration all before 1p. Then as I mentioned before, my job is super crazy with back to school marketing stuff so calls the rest of the afternoon. Then I picked up the kids and took them for dinner and some play time in an outdoor fountain at the local town center. Phewww — I’m exhausted!  End of school year is just as busy as back to school time in my life it seems.

Sleep does a body good


In addition to me being a bit under the weather, my real job has been insanely busy. I work for an education company and the time before Back to school is our busiest. We are feverishly working trying to get our ducks in a row ready for the upcoming school year.  It seems that everyone around me is crankier than usual including me. I just don’t even have the slightest bit of patience and it is taking a toll on the people around me.

I did get to see my boy Nate perform in his Kindergarten play today. They did Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes and he was the cat in the fiddle. That did bring my spirits up a bit but in order to make it to the performance, I had to leave an important meeting earlier than I and the participants would have liked.   It’s the pressure of the working parent but moments like those don’t happen forever and they grow up way too fast – I am not willing to miss a thing!

I skipped my usual Thursday workout to get extra sleep since I am not feeling so great. It is somewhat out of character for me but I realized recently that while I love getting exercise and being fit, I can’t get crazy about it.  Sleep does a body good too!

I may go out for a run tomorrow morning depending on how I feel. My goal is some sort of formal exercise 5x a week and sometimes I even go to 6. I know it’s close to an obsession.

Yesterday was Take Your Kid to Work day. Scott’s company Aol. had a great program set up for the kids – from learning to blog to working the controls in a broadcast studio. It was a great day full of fun and learning.

My company, K12, also did a great program that was focused around Earth Day for the younger set of kids. We wanted to expose the older kids to a few different topics that we handle within our walls. I was asked to talk to the 8-12th graders about social media and how we approach it in the virtual education field. I always love talking to kids. The way they see the world really fascinates me. Maybe it’s the unfiltered perspective they have. I had a great time trying to connect with them. I think I did a pretty good job, but it could be just that they were humoring me out of sheer boredom! I did try to talk about how I came into my current position and some tips on things to think about when they do enter into the workforce (like networking).

Whenever I talk to tween/teens I always end up learning something. For instance, there was not one in this group of about 15 kids that used myspace or twitter. They all have used Facebook. Most didn’t even know what twitter was. That was surprising and I talked a bit about some cool stuff you can do on twitter – it didn’t seem to interest them.

All in all – it was such a fun day and I wish I had more time to talk with them – but social media work was waiting for me.
