Climbing Higher

Well that was a super busy weekend, that went way too fast as usual.

kings dSaturday, I started the day off with a great workout and then headed to Kings Dominion for their Planet Spooky event and go trick or treating with the Dinosaurs!. The folks at KD were kind enough to ask me to attend on the house and I will be writing up a separate post on that experience.

We got home late, very tired but a day well spent with the kiddos, enjoying the beautiful 90 degree weather in October.

climbSunday, we all slept in and then HB and I went to Sportrock Climbing Center in Sterling with some of the folks from HighBar CrossFit. Learning to climb has always been something on my bucket list. I even bought a groupon earlier this year but haven’t used it, so it was a great opportunity to give it a try. And you know what? I think I am hooked. I loved it. It surprised me in a few ways.

  1. It’s a mental sport. You really have to think about each move and learn to think outside of the box. There are times when you need to grab the same ledge, or move your feet wider. Strategy and deliberate movements are key.
  2. It’s about your legs more than your upper body. I have always thought it was more about upper body strength, but found out that isn’t the case.
  3.  It’s super fun and at least at Sportrock, there are walls for beginners and the more advanced so even if you have never done it before, you can do it.

And another benefit, HB told me how cool she thought it was that I tried it. She said most of her friends’ parents don’t do stuff like that. It was a proud parent moment. It’s all about learning for me. Doing stuff that challenges me and takes me out of my comfort zone. I was scared shitless the first wall yesterday I climbed – not even mentioning the leaning back and sitting part so the person spotting you can bring you down. Talk about a moment of fear. There is no reason why we all can’t learn new stuff and step out of our comfort zones regularly. It keeps you motivated, inspired and having fun. It’s a part of living a healthy & fit life, no matter your age.

Today’s workout was all about testing after our 12 week strength program, so there was no mini-metcon. It was all warming up to get to our 1 rep max power clean. I have a long way to go with my overall form, so while the amount I cleaned wasn’t super impressive, my form is looking a lot better. When I got home and looked at my previous numbers, I realized it was a 10# PR even though it wasn’t perfect form.

Strength

1 RM
Power Clean 110#

I have a lot of work to do on my pull and shrug for sure – but it’s improving and I am making progress. Which in the end, is all on the path to moving forward.

Here’s something I read over the weekend that I just loved — and goes to show you that no matter who you are, you are never too old or ‘deadly’ to answer a kid and make a difference in someone’s life.
